Remembering Edwin Clark (1889-1917)
Today we mark the centenary of the death of Edwin Clark. Edwin was a former City amateur half back. He played for the reserves at the start of the 1912-13 season before joining the Royal Navy.
Strictly speaking, 5th December 1917 is when he had the fatal accident while doing routine work aboard his ship. This is the date on his gravestone in St Mary’s churchyard, Clyst St Mary.
He’d fallen into the sea from the upper deck, his head hitting a torpedo net. On 6th December, he died in a Grimsby hospital. His wife had travelled from Whipton to be with him.
It’s the club’s intention to lay a wreath at Edwin’s grave. He, along with twelve other WW1 fatalities, iscommemorated in the Garden of Remembrance at St James Park.
