Gail Martin won the Director for a Day prize for the home match a gainst Cambridge last month and brought along her friend Julie Dunlop.
Nick Edwards, a Trust Board Member, was their host for the day and said “The DfaD and guest really enjoyed today - made better by three points even with the nail biting second half. Both used to play for City's ladies team back in the day and as you know Julie's dad was Billy Dunlop! I took them to the museum and Pete showed them the newish women's team display. They had their picture taken by the poster and one with Angela who also played. The official photographer took some shots of them on the steps and are attached are a couple of pics I took of them with Reece Cole and the boss. All in all a great advert for our football club.”.
Nick received the following from Gail: “Thanks so much for your company and hospitality - we both really enjoyed the whole experience and the win topped off a perfect day!”.
Of course Gail and Julie are well know to lots of people at the Club as they are both long-standing volunteers as recounted by Richard knight, our SLO: “They are Senior Red stalwarts. Make teas etc at their monthly forums. Julie’s (sister Jane Grey) father, Billy Dunlop, played for ECFC and she was a regular with City women. There is a Scotland connection as well. In 1950 Billy joined from Dunfermline and later played for Ilfracombe before returning to the Football League with Bradford Park (Avenue) and Darlington ahead of living out his life in Devon.”
I approached Gail for some reaction and background:
“We had a super day and both thoroughly enjoyed the experience , Nick was a great host and as you say the icing on the cake was the 3 points 👍
Both Julie and I have been supporting Exeter City for over 60 years - both sets of parents introduced us to the club at a very young age and our love of our team has remained throughout our lives.
Great away travels to the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Leicester, Newcastle (on a train in the height of winter with no heating) but also to grounds like Rochdale, Hereford, Scunthorpe, Forest Green etc often sharing a car with the late Chris Woolcott.
I was very involved with the old Centre Spot when it was a membership Club - on the old big bank and then when it moved to new premises before moving to our present building. I was Chairperson of the social club committee and along with other elected members we raised money to put on events in the club.
Our New years Eve parties were brilliant, we ran Bingo sessions on Sunday nights; we held annual Bonfire night events (fireworks/hot dogs etc); we put on a children’s Xmas party with Santa Claus.
I could go on and on - my love for this club holds no bounds and I know the same can be said for my friend Julie. Both season ticket holders/trust members) and loyal supporters to our lovely club that we are very proud of how are club is run and long may it continue.”
